Hot Mush
Miss Hannigan: What are you just standing around here for? You're supposed to clean the bathroom and the kitchen before lunch, my little pig droppings, and if you skip the corners, there will be no lunch. And we're not having hot mush today...
Orphans: Yay!
Miss Hannigan: We're having cold mush!
So, today I introduced Zach to the wonderful world of hot mush.
When I was growning up, we mostly had cold cereal and milk. To date, that is still one of my favorite foods (next to cookies, donuts, and pizza...but I guess that's beside the point). But when I worked at Conquest, I gained an appreciation for hot mush.
Zach sat at the bar and ate his cold cereal while I made the hot mush. As I did so, I explained to him what I was doing, how many Tbsp to put in, how long to cook it, not to take it out without and adult's help, etc. Then the exciting part came. You know, the part where you put in the sugar. I explained to him about brown sugar and how it was different from white sugar (it's brown), and that when we put it in it melts and we swirl it around with our spoon so we can pretend we're eating it on a television commercial for hot mush. I even got him to taste it. He said it was "okay." Just okay? Well, you can't put much stock in the opinion of a kid who will eat an entire lemon because it's "tasty." Ah well, more hot mush for me.
Stats:
130 calories (yes! only 130! but that's before sugar)
5 g protein (in my breakfast cereal? get out!)
100% of your DV folic acid (you heard me right)
60% of your DV iron (that's right, baby)
only .5 g fat
Just okay? Just okay? Why, with my special seasonings, it tastes like cookies and donuts! (but not, sadly, like pizza). Just okay? You're just okay.
