Hot Mush

Miss Hannigan: What are you just standing around here for? You're supposed to clean the bathroom and the kitchen before lunch, my little pig droppings, and if you skip the corners, there will be no lunch. And we're not having hot mush today...

Orphans: Yay!

Miss Hannigan: We're having cold mush!

So, today I introduced Zach to the wonderful world of hot mush.

When I was growning up, we mostly had cold cereal and milk. To date, that is still one of my favorite foods (next to cookies, donuts, and pizza...but I guess that's beside the point). But when I worked at Conquest, I gained an appreciation for hot mush.

Zach sat at the bar and ate his cold cereal while I made the hot mush. As I did so, I explained to him what I was doing, how many Tbsp to put in, how long to cook it, not to take it out without and adult's help, etc. Then the exciting part came. You know, the part where you put in the sugar. I explained to him about brown sugar and how it was different from white sugar (it's brown), and that when we put it in it melts and we swirl it around with our spoon so we can pretend we're eating it on a television commercial for hot mush. I even got him to taste it. He said it was "okay." Just okay? Well, you can't put much stock in the opinion of a kid who will eat an entire lemon because it's "tasty." Ah well, more hot mush for me.

Stats:
130 calories (yes! only 130! but that's before sugar)
5 g protein (in my breakfast cereal? get out!)
100% of your DV folic acid (you heard me right)
60% of your DV iron (that's right, baby)
only .5 g fat

Just okay? Just okay? Why, with my special seasonings, it tastes like cookies and donuts! (but not, sadly, like pizza). Just okay? You're just okay.

Hot mush has always been one of my favorites - I really like oatmeal and especially Cream of Wheat. They used to make a hot cereal called Mapo (or something like that) that had a maple flavor. My favorite way to make my hot cereal lately is to put a tablespoon or two of the instant vanilla pudding from the dry pack in it. It gives you a dash of salt, your sugar, powdered milk and or course vanilla flavoring all in one. And the best thing about hot cereal = it's CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. My Mom made the best oatmeal for special occasions - like sleepovers. I'm not sure how she did it but it tasted like rice pudding. I'm sure she stirred a couple eggs into the hot cereal, she used brown sugar, cinnomon and raisins but I'm not sure if there was anything else. It was sooo good.

Hot mush.... my mom use to disquise hot mush with chocolate chips, rasins, and whatever little goodie she could think of to get us kids to eat oatmeal (that's its true name) oatmeal was and is just plain mush. No thanks, no thanks, and no thanks. You poor people keep on eating your hot mush, as for me eggs and toast makes the best breakfeast to date.

At least he said it was okay. I cannot get my children to eat anything that looks like oatmeal or mush at all. Best of luck.
I want to see current pictures of the new home.
Have fun!

My favorite is you take oatmeal, barley, and as many other grains as you can get, you soak them over night. In the morning you cook off the water, add a little sugar, some banana, and top it off with yogurt, yes I said yogurt (strawberry works best) Complement with english muffins. You won't have to eat again till dinner. It sticks to the ribs, leaving you full but not stuffed, the term actually is satisfied. This meal is the only time I have ever been satisfied by food in my life. Try it. tersessa
